Neel Ronger Ghora

The play on floor, 'Nil Ranger Ghora' (BLUE COLOURED HORSE), is one of the early writings of Late Shri Mohit Chattopadhyay, written at the time when his plays depicted stories beyond realism. Referred as an exponent of Indian Absurd Drama, the cryptic nature of his plays encouraged critics to call them " KIMTIBADI" in Bengali, which is English meant "What is it ".

Though Chattopadhyay refuse to be labelled as an absurdist Playwright, "Nil Ranger Ghora' can thus be categorized as a more surrealistic and expressionistic play. The story revolves around 'Somnath' the protagonist, his luck as an intuitive gambler in horse racing, his successful yet intense relationship with 'Parna' , and his wife " Mrinmoyee's " inconsistent support for his gambling and so on . Situation being to change as he starts wining every gamble due to an informer (an imaginary unreal boy who gives the result to gamble in advance).

Somnath' s intuitions are then proved correct and thereby his financial conditions improve. He then succumbs to greed, the flame of which intensifies with utmost contribution of his wife, son Bimal and daughter Minu. But this practice makes Somnath a very calculative, less speculative and a boring human being. Life become less interesting for him as if his own soul left him to die and his body remains as a mere cover. In the end Parna tries to help him come out of this situation but discovers a tragic incident through that informer boy.

The whole play is divided into sections and each section is based on a particular/specific time frame. It is left to the viewers to co-relate between this different time frame and the surrealistic nature of the play.
